Partial Dentures: Prices vary $645 and up

A removable partial denture is a dental device worn intraorally that replaces one or more, but not all missing teeth in an arch. They can be made of acrylic or a combination of acrylic and metal. Either design is removable by the wearer.

Removable partial dentures are held in place by adhesion (saliva), friction, wrought wire clasps, or a cast framework that incorporates cast clasps and or precision attachments.

An acrylic removable partial denture without clasps is the least retentive design. If the remaining teeth are healthy, in the right position and the right shape this type of removable partial denture may suit your needs. Often this type of partial is referred to as a temporary or transitional denture intended for limited use while other dental work is being completed. This design of partial is supported by mucosal tissue not teeth and may contribute to further tooth loss due to vertical movement.

An acrylic removable partial denture with up to two wrought wire clasps is more retentive due to the addition of wire clasps on appropriate teeth.

A cast removable partial denture is designed to transfer chewing forces from artificial teeth to remaining natural teeth by means of a rigid metal framework that incorporates cast clasps and rests. Acrylic teeth and gums (saddles ) attached to the framework replace lost teeth and offer a larger chewing area. There is a limit to the number of teeth that can be replaced. Each remaining natural tooth is exposed to increasing forces as more teeth are lost and at some point their natural strength may be exceeded resulting in further tooth loss. Any teeth expected to support the framework usually need to have special dimples carved in them by a dentist. These small preparations make room for rests in the framework. Rests restrict tissueward vertical movement while clasps restrict dislodging forces like sticky foods.

Precision attachments are machined parts that are permanently affixed to natural teeth. The framework incorporates mating attachments that are less visible than cast clasps and do the work of both clasps and rests.

The lifespan of a partial depends on which one is chosen, the cast partial lasts five to seven years.
